U.S. doctor urges colleagues not to perform transvaginal ultrasounds

Guest Post: A Doctor on Transvaginal Ultrasounds – Whatever:

'via Blog this'

It is our responsibility, as always, to protect our patients from things that would harm them. Therefore, as physicians, it is our duty to refuse to perform a medical procedure that is not medically indicated. Any medical procedure. Whatever the pseudo-justification.
It’s time for a little old-fashioned civil disobedience.

Not quite absolution for the medical profession, and not a decisive battle in the War on Women, but every little bit helps.

Just so we know the whole Excited States hasn't gone utterly bugfuck.

One Town's War on Gay Teens | #uspoli #lgbt

One Town's War on Gay Teens | Politics News | Rolling Stone:

"Asked on a radio program whether the anti-gay agenda of her ilk bore any responsibility for the bullying and suicides, Barb Anderson, co-author of the original "No Homo Promo," held fast to her principles, blaming pro-gay groups for the tragedies. She explained that such "child corruption" agencies allow "quote-unquote gay kids" to wrongly feel legitimized. "And then these kids are locked into a lifestyle with their choices limited, and many times this can be disastrous to them as they get into the behavior which leads to disease and death," Anderson said. She added that if LGBT kids weren't encouraged to come out of the closet in the first place, they wouldn't be in a position to be bullied."

This is from the fetid fever swamp otherwise known as Michele Bachmann's home district.

Why this tumorously stupid woman and her comrade-in-bigotry Rick Santorum aren't pelted with eggs, targeted with rotten fruit and/or tarred and feathered for daring to open their pieholes in public is beyond me, but hey -- it's not my country.

But can we please, for Christ's sake, stop confusing their ignorant, stupid, hateful superstition with Christianity? I mean, I don't claim to be a biblical scholar, but I can't remember anything about Jesus counselling his disciples to bully, harass and abuse LGBT kids to the point of suicide.

Have I reiterated the need to sandbag the border recently?

Krugman: The President Surrenders on Debt Ceiling - NYTimes.com

The President Surrenders on Debt Ceiling - NYTimes.com

OK, can we do a couple of things for starters?

1. Lose the illusion that Obama's got any balls, or that he's in any way "progressive," or that there's much substantive institutional and policy difference between Democrats and Republicans. All the drama coming from Washington is just so much kabuki theatre.

A meta-narrative for the Tucson shootings

Not much to add to the chorus of horror and outrage regarding the shootings in Tucson. Everything that can be said in terms of immediate reaction and analysis has already been said, and for that I must acknowledge, once again, the stellar work of the Dawgmeister, Cathie, and Montreal Simon, among others.

Why the liars are winning

Couple of days ago, Rick Perlstein published an essay on The Daily Beast that sets out, in succinct and convincing terms, one of the most important reasons that our friends to the south are in such trouble.

I'm not alone in lamenting the debasement and vulgarization of civil discourse and the attendant coarsening of political culture, but Perlstein's got one of the most influential and worrisome dynamics down pat: the far-right crazies, teabaggers and Palinbots lie their asses off, and no one – not the Obama administration, the Democratic establishment, the Villagers nor the "lamestream media" – will call them on it.

Jon Stewart at the Rally for Sanity

(h/t Dammit Janet)

Man, it's just one extreme to the oth ...

No. No, I can't complete that thought, because to finish that sentence would be to betray a complete misapprehension of what Stewart seems to be aiming for: namely, a swing away from extremes.

Sun readers: prepare for wet dream

Thugs, violence, kidnapping and threats. Just another midterm election in Rupert Murdoch's Amerika.

(h/t Dr. Dawg)

Update: Let's add sexual assault to the mix, just in case it's not noxious enough. H/t Jymn, Cliff and Uzza.

What happens when sane people stay home

Straying a little bit from this week's Fordapalooza – you know, the one where they demand loyalty oaths at the door – to cast an eye toward our friends to the south.

Via @Shoq, this special comment from Keith Olbermann on the teabaggers and their electoral prospects next Tuesday.

Seriously.

This scares the shit out of me.

Aggressive, hardball progressive politics

What we need more of in this country. Digby's got it exactly right.

For those of you who don't know Congressman Alan Grayson, here's an introduction. He's doing God's work.
