Time out from talk of elections.
Sixty-two-year-old George Wass died earlier this week after someone attacked him on the steps of a Parkdale rooming house last Friday. He was hospitalized briefly and then released. He had been kicked repeatedly in the head and the ribs. He suffered two cracked ribs, cuts to his head and face, a black eye, and had trouble breathing. The autopsy said he died from blunt force trauma to the chest.
It was the fifth attack on a mentally disabled Parkdale resident since January. It's believed that the same person is behind all the attacks.
This video from Paisley Rae is a response to George's death.
Can't really add much to it.
I grew up in Parkdale and vividly remember when the Davis government "de-institutionalized" the mentally ill without the promised support systems. The neighborhood was flooded with the mentally ill and of course with those who would prey upon them, sadly little has changed.
ReplyDeleteI heard about this on CBC Radio the other night. Horrible attack and outcome. We should be ashamed that such things happen under our watch.
ReplyDeleteThe more acceptable depraved political agendas become, the more acceptable it becomes for many in society to prey on those considered weak. Kev is right, the downsizing of services started awhile ago but the violence against the poor, mentally ill and homeless has really ramped up in the last decade where the concept of caring for others has become alien for too many.
